The issue

Following a 12 week public consultation, the Government has decided to close up to 2,500 post office branches across the country, with about 500 being replaced by "more efficient" ways of serving the local community.

Post Office Ltd now has to carry out the Government's wishes. It has more information on its website about the planned closure programme.

Some statistics:

3,500 post offices were closed by the Conservatives

4,000 post offices have already been closed under Labour

2,500 more post offices are now under threat
